Speaking of Tenjin (the another name of Sugawara no Michizane), nationwide there are shrines called "Tenmangu(Tenjin enshrined shrines)", it is famous for the deity of academic. In Tokyo, Yushima Tenjin shrine is popular with people who pray the academic achievement especially for students.Precincts is not so large, but there is a plum garden, and a Main shrine is fine.

History

The Yushima Tenjin that many students come to pray for passing the exam in the an entrance examination season.its history back to Yuryaku tenno 2 (458 AD), Amenotadikarawo no mikoto was enshrined. Amenotadikarawo no mikoto is the deity who pulled out Amaterasu from Ama no iwato (Cave of heaven).Then, the light has returned to the world. The time passed, in Shohei 10 (1355AD), Sugawara no Michizane was invited and enchrined. Scholars and literati as Hayashi Doshun, Mtsunaga Shakugo, Hori Kyoan, Gyoe, Arai Hakuseki visited the shrine. Also Sugawara no Michizane was excellent in poetry therefore he is known as the deity of poetry.
